9th Grade Student Work: Chiaroscuro Paintings John the Baptist, Caravaggio
Students learned about the dramatic lights and darks used in chiaroscuro style paintings. As beginning artists, limiting the use of colors helps them to see basic value changes throughout the painting. Not only do we get to talk about Renaissance Art but this project will also prepare them for the 'underpainting' that will come next year.

Today, Tonganoxie Art I students visited the Nelson Atkins Museum of Art. Our intention was to study their thrilling collection of Renaissance art but I believe the students left with so much more:
Before doing a large large project, I like to do some exploration with the medium. This two day project allowed students to learn about the mannerisms and characteristics of watercolor. It's one of those subtle times that they are learning and they don't even know it. After finding a resource photograph, the students recreated a sunset as a loose wash. Then, with sharpie, they added in the foreground silhouette. The project was a hit! To many of my first year art students, it is their favorite artwork they have ever made.

About MeArt Room Drama refers not only to the animated personalities that circulate through a high school art room, but also the vibrant intensity that a great work of art can provide. My classroom is a combination of both. I am a third-year art teacher with a passion for introducing the dynamic, intriguing, and constantly changing world of art to my students. CategoriesArchives |
